Coastal Source EB2650 Review: The New Benchmark for Outdoor Audio

For years, the Coastal Source 10.0 3-Way has been one of my favorite outdoor loudspeakers. It delivers serious output, excellent clarity and the kind of durability you want from a permanently installed high-end outdoor audio system.

So when Coastal Source introduced the new EB2650, I had a pretty simple question: how much better could it really be?

The answer is: quite a bit.

The EB2650 doesn’t make the 10.0 3-Way obsolete. The 10.0 remains an excellent speaker and, depending on the project and budget, can still be the right choice. But the EB2650 takes outdoor audio to another level of refinement.

What Is the Coastal Source EB2650?

The EB2650 is a true three-way outdoor loudspeaker combining Coastal Source’s EB1150 satellite section with its B1500 bass module.

Up top is a large-format coaxial driver incorporating a weatherized 3-inch planar ribbon tweeter. The bass section uses four 6.5-inch woofers in a force-canceling configuration.

That combination matters because plenty of outdoor speakers can play loud. Some can produce substantial bass. Far fewer can maintain detail, balance and refinement while doing both.

That is where the EB2650 really separates itself.

The Biggest Difference: The High Frequencies

The first thing that stands out to me with the EB2650 is the top end.

The ribbon tweeter is exceptionally smooth.

There is plenty of detail, but it never comes across as artificially bright or aggressive. Vocals sound natural, cymbals have texture and instruments retain the small details that can easily disappear outdoors.

That becomes especially important when the volume comes up. Outdoor systems have to cover large areas without relying on walls and room boundaries, and lesser speakers can become harsh when pushed.

The EB2650 remains composed.

For me, this is probably the single biggest audible improvement over the already very capable 10.0 3-Way.

Bass Performance Is on Another Level

Then there is the low end.

Each EB2650 uses four 6.5-inch woofers in a force-canceling configuration. The result isn’t simply more bass. The bass extends lower, sounds tighter and gives music considerably more weight and authority.

Kick drums have real impact. Bass guitar has texture instead of becoming a generic low-frequency thump. Electronic music has the kind of foundation that makes an outdoor system sound substantial even at moderate listening levels.

For many systems, the EB2650 also reduces the need to place separate subwoofers throughout the property.

There are certainly applications where additional subs still make sense, particularly very large pool areas or systems intended for serious party-level output. But the EB2650 starts with an unusually strong full-range foundation.

It Sounds Good Even When You Aren’t Playing It Loud

This may be one of the most important things about the EB2650.

Most premium outdoor audio systems aren’t running at party volume all day.

Most of the time, people are having dinner, relaxing by the pool, sitting around a fire pit or entertaining friends. The system may spend far more time at conversational listening levels than at maximum output.

The EB2650 still sounds full at those levels.

You hear the bass. You hear the detail. Vocals remain present and natural. The speaker doesn’t need to be pushed before it starts sounding impressive.

And when you do turn it up, there is a lot of output available without the sound becoming thin or abrasive.

That ability to go from refined background music to a serious pool party is exactly what I want from a high-end outdoor system.

A Major Advantage: Much Simpler Wiring

The EB2650 also has a major practical advantage that may not be obvious from simply looking at the speaker: the wiring architecture is considerably easier.

Because Coastal Source’s multi-conductor cable architecture can carry multiple channels simultaneously, we can run a single master cable from the amplifier to the first EB2650 and then continue from speaker to speaker.

Each EB2650 effectively has one cable coming in and one cable going out, so only one cable is required between speakers.

Other compatible Coastal Source speakers can also be added into that same daisy chain.

That is a significant improvement on larger systems. Instead of running separate left and right speaker cables, separate subwoofer runs and multiple home runs back to a central location, a properly designed EB2650 system can follow a much cleaner path through the landscape.

The result is fewer home runs, less cable, less trenching and a cleaner installation overall.

As someone who designs these systems as well as listens to them, that is a meaningful advantage.

EB2650 vs. Coastal Source 10.0 3-Way

I still like the Coastal Source 10.0 3-Way. A lot.

It remains capable of creating an outstanding outdoor audio system, and there is a meaningful price difference between the two models.

But they are not the same speaker.

The simplest way I can describe the difference is:

The 10.0 3-Way sounds like an extremely good outdoor speaker.

The EB2650 starts to sound like a high-end loudspeaker that happens to live outdoors.

Compared with the 10.0 3-Way, the EB2650 gives you:

  • Smoother and more refined high frequencies
  • Better low-frequency extension
  • Greater bass authority
  • More detail at moderate listening levels
  • More effortless output when pushed
  • A larger, more substantial overall presentation
  • Significantly simpler system wiring

If the budget allows, the EB2650 is my preference.

If it doesn’t, I would have absolutely no hesitation designing a system around the 10.0 3-Way. It remains one of the best outdoor speakers available.

Built for Permanent Outdoor Installation

Sound quality is only part of the equation with outdoor audio.

The equipment has to survive outside.

That is one of the reasons I continue to use Coastal Source for high-performance outdoor systems. Their approach extends beyond the speaker itself to the cabling, connectors, amplification and complete installation architecture.

In a permanent outdoor installation, every splice and connection can eventually become a potential failure point. Coastal Source’s purpose-built Plug+Play cabling and weather-resistant connection system helps eliminate much of that vulnerability.

For a premium system expected to remain outside year-round, that matters.

Who Is the EB2650 For?

I think the EB2650 makes the most sense for someone who wants outdoor audio to be a legitimate part of the home’s entertainment system rather than simply a few background speakers around a patio.

It is particularly well suited for:

  • Large pool and patio environments
  • High-end outdoor living spaces
  • Properties with multiple entertainment areas
  • Clients who care about music quality
  • Systems that need both background listening and serious output
  • Projects where fewer, higher-performing loudspeakers are preferred over filling the property with small speakers

Proper system design still matters. Speaker placement, orientation, stereo separation, landscape architecture, amplification and DSP configuration all affect the finished result.

The goal should never be simply to install expensive speakers. The goal is to design the property as an outdoor listening environment.

My Verdict

The Coastal Source EB2650 is the best outdoor loudspeaker I have heard from Coastal Source to date.

What impressed me most isn’t simply how loudly it can play. It is the refinement.

The ribbon tweeter is smoother. The bass reaches deeper. The overall presentation sounds larger, more controlled and more natural.

And it manages to be equally convincing playing quietly during dinner as it is when the volume comes up for a pool party.

There are less expensive ways to put music outside. There are also very good outdoor audio systems available below this level.

But for someone looking for one of the highest-performing permanently installed outdoor loudspeakers available today, the EB2650 deserves serious consideration.
